13 MAY 3150

The remains of Russell’s dinner of grilled fish, meat and potato stew, cucumber salad, miso soup, and brown rice sat on the table in front of him, along with a nearly full sake bottle next to the plate. He dozed in the chair, the meal and the day’s strenuous activity finally catching up with him.

He didn’t hear the persistent knock at first, but the sound finally penetrated his awareness. He slowly opened his eyes, and after a moment, hauled himself out of the chair and walked to the door, yawning on the way.

When he opened the door, he found Mayu Nishimura standing there, with a bag in one hand and wearing a doctor’s white coat. “Russell.”

“Mayu.” He stepped back and held the door open for her to enter.

She walked past him and looked at the table. “I see you’ve eaten.”

He nodded. “I was looking over a couple incidents that occurred this afternoon.”

“What incidents?”

“Someone assassinated Akechi Toda, the assistant director of the ISF’s Mokonete division this afternoon.”

“What?”

“You didn’t know?”

“I’ve been involved in paperwork most of the day. What happened?”

“She was meeting with a businessman at lunchtime when three men walked up to their table and killed her, her bodyguards, and the man she was meeting with. In the confusion, the assassins got away.”

“Any description of them?”

“Three men in suits. Beyond that, nothing solid.”

“Where did this happen?’

“The Sakura Inn.”

Mayu paled. “I’ve had dinner there!”

“The place is closed, and the ISF isn’t letting anyone near it.”

She nodded. “You said there were a couple of incidents.”

“A reporter for the Voice of the Dragon was killed while eating lunch outside the station she worked for. Like with Toda, two men in suits walked up and shot her without saying a word, and they also got away. The ISF is also handling that case.”

“Do you think the cases are connected with yours?”

“It’s possible, but the ISF will dig their heels in if any outsider investigates, even if the Coordinator suggests such a thing. Also, we don’t have the staff to expand our investigations.” He shook his head. “We need to focus on your sister’s murder and those connected to it. It could be the enemy is trying to spread out our resources.”

“True.” She held up the sake bottle and gave him a questioning look.

“Check the glass,” he replied.

She looked at the still mostly filled glass next to the plan and raised an eyebrow.

“I’m not much of a drinker,” he said.

She opened the bedroom door and looked in. “I thought you were told to get some rest.”

“I was sleeping in the chair. Not the first time I’ve done it, won’t be the last.”

“How are you feeling?’

“Sore, but better, now that I’ve eaten.”

She looked him over. “Take off your shirt.”

He blinked at her. “Why?”

“I want to check the bruises.”

He sighed and undid the buttons. As his shirt came off, her eyes widened when she saw the crisscrossing of bruises from the Kestrel’s harness. “Are you all right?”

“I’m fine. Your colleagues said I would feel the pain in the morning.
